Textile Tales in CONTEXTILE 2024
A look at some of the work on show at the Contemporary Textile Art Biennial in Guimarães, Portugal
Let’s start with the headline act. The invited artist this year was Josep Grau-Garriga who I didn’t know much about (still don’t, honestly) but I very much enjoyed spending time with these very large, richly textured weaves.
Then the Open Call and Canadian (the invited country) exhibitions had such a range of styles, materials, forms…
These are by António Jorge from Portugal (I can’t find a link for Insta or a website sorry, but aren’t they great?!)
By Camilla Marinoni
By Carole Simard-Laflamme
This work was beautiful and delicate, by Anna Ill who seems to combine materials in a very poetic way.
Another delicate one. By Konrad Juściński made from actual dandelion seeds.
By Josipa Stefanec
By Loreta Švaikauskienė
This piece was attached to headphones and when you touched different parts of it you could change the sounds that were coming through. By Etech Studio
‘Chaos’ (literally). By Chilean artist Carlos Bautista Biernnay
By Nikos Iosif
And then there was this brilliant video by Graeme Patterson ‘Strange Birds’ - one of the featured costumes are below.
That’s it for now. Sorry for the mixed photo quality. As always, you can find me here on Insta - come and say hi xx
Thank you for this collection of finds!! I love the strange birds. I will send it to a friend. She too will love it!
The dandelion seeds are amazing. Imagine working with something so delicate.
The top weaves look the complete opposite, as in their density and weight. They are amazing. I’m off to explore more now. Thanks for showing us Megan
